Floating Counter Support Brackets –
Upholding This Sustainable Home

by Rakks | May 21st, 2014

Five dot design build is an architectural firm located in Seattle, Washington. They focus on sustainable projects that bring together like-minded collaborators. The firm’s work reflects their belief that sustainable design should be easily accessible, genuinely inspired and always beautiful.

In this single family home that is clearly focused on sustainability, a wooden counter top is provided a strong foundation by Rakks’ nearly invisible Counter Support Brackets, giving it a floating effect. The home is located in Seattle’s Greenlake neighborhood and even includes a system for harvesting rainwater as an alternative water source for the baths and laundry, but it is the countertop in the bath that is stunning.

For this unique item the architects enlisted the help of Tree Green Team, a Canadian company that produces custom live edge wood furniture that is handcrafted from salvaged trees. Tree Green Team does not cut down live trees. They only use trees that have been cleared and often are destined to become firewood.

The sculptural counter top appears to float in the space. This solution was quite a design achievement considering the weight and mass of the wood. The architects installed Rakks Flush Mounted Counter Support Brackets for superior strength and nearly invisible support in this installation. These flush mounted brackets have an L-shaped vertical leg that measures 2” x 2” x 1/4” and is screwed to the side of the wall stud. When installation of the brackets is complete, drywall is mounted to the studs and hides the vertical support leg.

Rakks is always pleased to be included in creative and sustainable projects like this one.
